Picture the quintessential African safari, and the mind invariably conjures scenes of Kenya: boundless golden savannahs studded with spindly acacias; elephants descending on watering holes; cheetahs and leopards hunting; guttural lion roars the soundtrack to dawn and dusk. The land that inspired Out of Africa, Born Free and The Lion King, the widescreen stage for the Great Migration, which sees two million wildebeest and zebra racing for their lives across plains inhabited by big cats and crocodiles.

    Tanzania

Mountain, savannah, river, reef. Tanzania is a land of contrasts, where wild scenes shift from the depths of Lake Tanganyika to the soaring heights of Mount Kilimanjaro. On a Tanzania safari, rhinos roam the Ngorongoro Crater. Lions stalk giraffes across Ruaha’s remote plains. And in the Serengeti, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra race across the kopje-strewn savannah during the Great Migration.

    Botswana

In Moremi Game Reserve, lions, leopards and lechwes live on islands studded with terracotta termite mounds, as awestruck travellers paddle silently past in mokoros in traditional canoes. Right across this crowd-free country, nature’s survival strategies offer extraordinary spectacles. In the Makgadikgadi Pans, a vast bed of crusted salt, thousands of zebras migrate between December and March to feast on surrounding nutrient-rich grasses, while meerkats dig for insects in the dust. And in the burning red sands of the Kalahari, communities of San people practice skills handed down by their ancestors.

    Namibia

Discover ancient rock art and visit the Himba people, whose ochre-painted skin reflects traditions unchanged for centuries. On a Namibia safari, you’ll explore some of Africa’s most remote wilderness, from fossilized trees under an endless sky to the burning heart of the Kalahari.

    Rwanda

Building on the legacy of Dian Fossey, gorilla trekking Rwanda brings travellers face to face with one of the world’s most endangered species. On a Rwanda safari, trek through farmland and bamboo forest to meet mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. These intimate encounters are at the heart of our Rwanda silverback gorilla tours, directly supporting the communities who protect them. Listen to chimpanzees drumming on buttress roots in Nyungwe Forest, and watch the Big Five roam Akagera National Park. Along the shores of Lake Kivu, fishermen sing as they row, while pastoralists tend their sacred Ankole cattle.
